The Upgrade from EMInet to HealthStream EMS

Change is Good
In January of 2000, EMInet became HealthStream | EMInet, after being acquired by HealthStream, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSTM). HealthStream is the leading provider of learning solutions for the healthcare industry. As of March 31, 2004, approximately 875,000 healthcare professionals had selected HealthStream for their learning needs. Today, we are the largest provider of online EMS continuing medical education in the world, having issued over 1,250,000 hours of credit to date.

Our mission to provide you with the best educational experience possible is a responsibility we take very seriously. To support you, we are always looking for ways to improve our service. We’re continuously expanding our library of new courses. Today, you’re reading this because we’ve made one of those rare but significant changes - a new, and improved, curriculum management system. We’ve also changed the name to HealthStream EMS.

The New System
The HealthStream Learning Center™ (HLC), HealthStream’s flagship Internet-based platform, is a suite of products and services, comprised of a learning management system, extensive learning library, and targeted learning services. Using the HLC, you will be able to manage course activity, track your credits, review assignments, and access courses from other HealthStream libraries. Training directors will be able to schedule on-site or on-line classes, insert organization-specific notes within courses, track students more easily, and build custom tests.

The New Courses
Best of all, the HLC is your gateway to our expanding library of new courses. All have been developed specifically for delivery over the Internet and are accessible even to students with low-bandwidth connections. Each course is designed for the adult learner, offering meaningful interactions such as animations, exercises, quizzes, resources links, and certification exams with randomized questions. Each course has been reviewed for accuracy in science and procedure and tested by practitioners you may actually know. We’ve even had course lengths validated through time studies.

This is real continuing education, and we’re not the only ones who think so. All of our courses have been developed to meet the new guidelines set by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS) for distributed learning. Since all of these courses meet the rigorous new CECBEMS guidelines, they also meet the standards for National Registry online recertification credit. Please click here for more details.

Beginning July 1, 2004, with the exception of a Texas and Pennsylvania who have prior agreements with HealthStream, the previous EMInet curriculum will no longer be available to practitioners seeking continuing education credit.

The following are questions, which you might be asking about this change:

What is the timeline for the transition from the EMInet platform to the HLC?

June 15th:

  1. Access to the HLC will begin for both students and administrators.
  2. No new students may be added to the EMInet platform. All new students must be added to the HLC.

July 1st:

  1. All students (except those in Texas or Pennsylvania) in the EMInet system must complete any in-progress course. After July 1st, students will not be able to access any courses in the EMInet system.

How do I access my HLC account?
Both students and administrators will be able to access their accounts on the HLC, using their existing EMInet account information. Please note that your current EMInet user name will become your new HLC user name and temporary password (both are the same). You may change your password after you access your account on the HLC for the first time. Access to your HLC account will be available from EMInet.com until July 1st and from http://www.healthstream.com/ems beginning June 15th.

How many continuing education credit hours are available from HealthStream EMS?
HealthStream currently has 47 hours of EMS CE and will be working aggressively to expand the library over the next eighteen months. By the end of August, total hours will have increased to 58 with the final library exceeding 140 total hours of CE.

Where can administrators learn more about the features of the new system?
HealthStream will be providing administrators with Web-based training on how to use the HealthStream Learning Center. This training will be accessible under the System Documentation section of the HLC. In addition, HealthStream will be providing weekly live Web Pro Sessions during the month of July to help users get started with the HLC. Customer Service representatives are also available from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Central time, by dialing 800-521-0574 (Choose Option 3, then listen for the appropriate prompt) or by e-mailing customer.service@healthstream.com.

What info will be moved over the HLC?

The following information, to the extent that it currently exists, will be imported into the HLC from the EMInet platform:

  • User Name (First, Middle, and Last)
  • User ID
  • Facility Name
  • EMT Level
  • State Recertification Date
  • License State
  • E-mail address

What will happen to courses on the EMInet platform in which I am currently enrolled?
All in-progress courses on the EMInet platform must be completed by June 15th. Incomplete courses will not be transferred to the HLC, nor will you be able to access them on the EMInet platform after June 15th.

Where and how will I access my old EMInet transcript?
Your transcript for credit hours earned on EMInet before the transition to the HLC will remain archived and available to you on the EMInet platform. (Please retain your account login information for the HealthStream / EMInet site.) The record of all courses completed by users on the HLC will be stored on the HLC platform in your student transcript.
